Here is a short story today for your consideration and application.

One day, a biologist observed an ant carrying a piece of straw that seemed to be a huge burden for her. The ant came to a crack in the ground that was too wide for her to cross. The ant stood for a moment as if considering the situation. Then the ant put the straw through the crack and crossed it like a span. “What a lesson for us! said the impressed biologist. “The burden can become the bridge of progress.”

Years ago, while visiting a high school friend in his company’s warehouse, I noticed one of his employees was wearing a shirt that had “The Power of Calm” printed on it. I started thinking about this concept, “The Power of Stillness”. So here are some thoughts on when calm thinking and living might direct us to the best action. Which would you rather embrace, the calm of a plan of attack or the chaos of a panic attack?

There is power in staying calm, especially when the situation calls for it. The ability to find calm in chaos improves your life. In chaotic times, we don’t need to control our impulsive thoughts. Instead, we need to stop letting impulsive thoughts control us. Here is an example of “The Power of Calm”.

There were two shipwrecked men on an island. One of them started screaming and screaming. ” We are going to die ! We are going to die ! There is no food. There is no water ! We’re going to die!” The second man was leaning against a palm tree, so calm he drove the first man mad. “Don’t you understand? We’re shipwrecked on an island. No food. There is a cost to losing your calm and composure. Moses could not enter the Promised Land because he had lost his temper when the people of Israel were, dare I say, the people of Israel. Annoying!

Look at Peter and Jesus the night Jesus was betrayed. Peter had a panic attack and cut off the soldier’s ear. Jesus had a plan of attack and calmly healed the soldier’s ear, like new, in the midst of the chaos of a betrayal.

The story of the prodigal son shows us the contrast between the power of impulse and the power of stillness. The prodigal son wanted his inheritance before he died. He was an instant person, wanting instant things instantly. The father gave the son his inheritance. Soon the son was living in misery and chaos. His money was gone, his identity shattered, his friends abandoned him, and he lived on a diet of leftover pork fodder. Where was his father? He was sitting on the porch of his house, waiting for her. The father discovered calm in the chaos.

He missed his father but held the hope that the son would return. The father of the prodigal son trusted his son more than the son trusted his father. That doesn’t mean the father wasn’t worried. But the father wouldn’t let his thoughts control him like his son did. Maybe the dad was like that when he said of Michael Caine, “Be like a duck, calm on the surface but paddling like the cocks below.”

Jesus calms the storms outside people, and He also calms the storms inside people. It takes real divine power to calm both of them down.

Here are some “calm in chaos” thoughts for you. Brené Brown once said, “I can always tell the health of a culture and an organization by the amount of gossip that happens. Karen Salmansohn says, “When you can’t control what happens, challenge yourself to control how you react to what happens. This is where the real power lies. David Allen says, “Patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than what you have in mind.” Another quote on calm by Mason Cooley for you: “Romance is tumultuous. Love is calm.

Quiet the incessant chatter in your head. God has a plan of attack, whereas we usually have a panic attack. Train your mind to act intellectually, not react emotionally. A calm mind breeds clear thinking. Take a deep breath, close your eyes and count to three. Someone out there who reads needed this article today.

Remember, God is not in strong wind, earthquake or fire. Instead, God is most often in the sound of a gentle breeze – 1 Kings 19:11-2. In other words, God whispers because God is near – and quiet. And trusting God is a real bridge through troubled waters for personal progress.
