ALTON – The Temple of Deliverance in Christ Church of God in Alton says goodbye to Mother Eddie Mae Harrison, who died October 14 at the age of 66.

Harrison is remembered as a mentor, educator and spiritual leader with ties to Alton, Edwardsville and Jacksonville.

“Small in stature, but mighty in power, faith and love, Mother Eddie Mae Harrison was your ultimate encouragement,” Leah Jo Becoat said on the Harrison Funeral Chapel website. “She always had kind words and a smile…telling me to ‘keep it up’.”

Other posts came from Illnois, Texas, Minnesota, Florida, Oklahoma and the Bahamas.

Born July 13, 1956, in Luxora, Arkansas, Harrison was the youngest of nine children. She moved to Alton in 1959 and graduated from Alton High School in 1974. She studied business administration at Lewis & Clark Community College and worked at Franklin Insurance Co. in Jacksonville. She served weekdays administratively in ministry at Holy Spirit in Christ Temple Church of God and weekends at Grace in Christ Temple Church of God in Edwardsville.

In 1979, she married Reverend Gregory L. Harrison and their entire family was instrumental in church development, outreach and community service.

In 1984, the inaugural service was held at Deliverance Temple Church of God in Christ at 2101 Washington Ave. in Alton, transforming a former store into a place of worship. In 1987 Deliverance Temple acquired the former Saint James Baptist Church at 1800 Market St. in Alton.

Deliverance Temple purchased Cherry Street Baptist Church in 2008, and on November 28, 2008, Superintendent Gregory Harrison and missionary Eddie Mae Harrison dedicated the more than 22,000 square foot complex at 1125 East 6th St. in Alton.

Her work at the church included Business Administration, Helper Ministry, Women’s Department, Auxiliary Ministries, Event Strategist, Ministry of the Word with Power and Demonstration, and Prayer and Demonstration Meetings. Tuesday and Thursday Bible study.

A book about her life, “The Leader’s Wife”, was published in 2016, followed by a study guide this year.

Visitation and a memorial musical were scheduled for Friday evening at Deliverance Temple Complex Church of God in Christ at 1125 E. 6th St. in Alton, with a funeral scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Enjoy Church, 3303 Homer M. Adams Parkway in Alton. Harrison’s Funeral Chapel in Alton is making arrangements.
