MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A man is behind bars after allegedly sexually assaulting a teenage girl at a local church.

Adam Perry, 36, has been charged with aggravated rape, sexual assault by an authority figure and aggravated kidnapping after an incident at the East Shelby Church of Christ located in the 4700 block of Mayfield Road W .in Collierville.

FOX13 obtained a letter that was sent to the congregation confirming Perry’s arrest.

The letter said:

To our members in East Shelby

The elders wanted to let you know of a situation involving our members in which we first announced to our congregation on May 4, 2022. The parents of a young teenage girl reported that their daughter had been sexually assaulted in the East Building Shelby. We were shocked and deeply saddened by this report.

Since then, the church has fully cooperated with law enforcement in their investigation and honored their request not to interfere with or comment on the investigation. As we have done over the past few years, we have continued to take steps to improve existing security measures, including increased surveillance during services, adding surveillance cameras to our building, and moving all Sr. High and below classes that are more easily controllable.

We have since learned that Adam Perry was arrested on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 on the following criminal charges: aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault by an authority figure.

Due to ongoing criminal proceedings, we are unable to share additional information at this time, but wanted to ensure that you are aware of this situation before it becomes public knowledge in the community. We are committed to keeping our church family informed as best we can as the situation evolves in the days ahead. In the meantime, please pray that God will continue to guide us through this difficult time and bring comfort and healing to all families involved, as well as to all of us in East Shelby. May God be with us all as Christians to shine as his lights even in the darkest times. We pray for the truth revealed by God in the days to come.

According to court records, Perry’s bail was set at $100,000 and it was paid.

An indictment against Perry says he intentionally had sexual contact with a person between the ages of 13 and 18 on April 6, 2022.

Court records show that Perry was in a position of trust at the time of the assault and used his position of trust to accomplish the sexual contact.

As a result of the assault, this teenager suffered bodily harm, the indictment states.

He is due in court on December 8.
